Equine Veterinarian, Dr. Melissa Milligan grew up in northeast Iowa. After earning her degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University, she entered veterinary school at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating with honors in 2002. She then completed a private practice internship at Equine Medical Associates in Edmond, Oklahoma and continued gaining valuable private practice experience as an associate following completion of her internship.
In 2004, Dr. Milligan began a three year equine surgical residency at Kansas State University. During her residency, Dr. Milligan investigated the complex issues of small intestinal motility, specifically the effects of lidocaine and its use in horses recovering from colic surgery. She received her Master of Science degree in Veterinary Clinical Sciences from Kansas State University in 2006.
Following completion of her surgical residency in July 2007 Dr. Milligan joined the staff at the Equine Specialty Hospital, and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in February 2008. She continues her interest in gastrointestinal surgery and wound healing, and became a business partner in 2011.
In 2014, Dr. Milligan and her husband Jeff purchased the hospital from her partners. In her free time, Dr. Milligan enjoys quilting, gardening, and spending time with her husband and animal family, which includes 2 dogs, her horse Red, and 3 goats.
